One evening when I was working at The State Theatre in Pretoria, the main
entrances were found to be inexplicably locked just before showtime. This
meant that audiences, performers (orchestra, dancers, actors) and crew
all had to access the building through the stage door. A harassed security
guard was trying in vain to keep order, check tickets and direct everyone
through the maze of passages. As the confusion and frustration grew, I
heard him spit vehemently: “This place would work so much better if it
wasn’t for you… People!”
People are unruly. That’s why your event needs a professional MC.
Any crowd can make a herd of ADHD cats on fire look like a precision drill
squad. Even without unforeseen complications, people add a healthy
dollop of chaos to proceedings. This can be funny for the casual observer,
but less so if it’s your company’s prestige function, designed to showcase
your abilities and achievements.
A good MC is part entertainer, part traffic conductor. It’s an invisible art
that’s a lot rarer than clients realise, precisely because when it’s done
right, nobody notices. The event flows seamlessly and both you and your
guests can relax and enjoy yourselves.
An MC makes even the most mundane “housekeeping” announcements
interesting and amusing, without plumbing the depths of hack airline
comedy routines. The audience is kept informed and the MC skillfully
focuses their attention on speeches and formalities when required,
without making them feel bullied.
The best person to MC your function is one who will treat it and everyone
involved with respect, take the trouble to prepare, use the correct titles
and pronounce names correctly.
Points to Consider when deciding on your MC:
Will the MC add genuine entertainment and real value?
Will you get reliable, value for money service?
Is the MC willing/able to adapt to your event?
Will the MC treat your event with respect?
Will the MC add or detract from the occasion?
Can the MC sight-read?
Does the MC take the trouble to pronounce the names of your
speakers and honourees correctly?
Comedy Set Included:
Of course, using Al Prodgers as MC also gives you the option to include a
comedy set for your guests’ enjoyment.
This is included in my MC rate at no extra cost.
